Ah Plot Holes — those things that make you say, “Wait a second”, and threaten your suspension of disbelief. Some movies are worse than others. This one occured to me recently. And I just watched Star Wars IV: A New Hope again this weekend and caught a couple more I’d never thought of. Hmm…maybe those will show up in The Brick Side, too.
There’s no monkey business when it comes to bank robbers on The Brick Side. We just won’t tolerate ‘em.
The background photo is in the public domain and comes from Wikimedia Commons as a result of the search “city street public domain.” I get tired of wading through all the terms of use on some of those things, when all I want is a picture of a city street that I’m free to do whatever I want with … and I didn’t have quite what I was looking for in my own personal files. Hmm … maybe it’s time to go out and randomly snap pictures of things around town … in my spare time. Wait, that’s when I work on The Brick Side … hmm. Okay, please continue being my friend, Wikimedia!
Yes, the first two panels are pictures of the real Joe Meno from BrickWorld 2009. My wife and I got to meet Joe (among many other awesome people) and chat with him a bit at BrickWorld. Joe is a great guy, and a lot of fun. (And, to her credit, Maria took the pictures of Joe seen here).
I’ve been wanting to include Joe in The Brick Side for a while, but was having trouble deciding on his Minifig persona. But punning on his last name then made it easy to create the alter persona, Joe Meano, which creates the irony that the real Joe Meno, is definitely not a “Meano.”
And this comic marks the first time I’ve used a completely non-LEGO photo for the thumbnail. (Gasp!)
Nannan Zhang is a well-known builder in the AFOL community. One of the genres that he has popularized is black fantasy, with creatures such as his Andante. Nannan was kind enough to allow me to copy his creation for The Brick Side.
You can follow Nannan’s work at Flickr, MOCPages, or BrickShelf.
The idea for this strip is actually one of my earlier ones, and I kept putting it off because I wasn’t quite sure how exactly I wanted the scene to look. I’m still not convinced I have it perfect, but it’s come a long way, and all the parts were there saying “now.” The idea behind the scene was a simple, “What if…” In this case, “What if Nannan’s Andante were real … and they came to get him.”
While some minifigs have portrayed disgust at the mere thought of eating a bowl of Cap’N Minifig Head Cereal, these guys have not.
Poor Joe Vig. All he wanted was a cup of coffee, but it looks like he got mixed up with the Bad Minifigs again!
I’ve worked very hard at avoiding any kind of political statements in my cartoons, but the current debate over nationalized health care in the US plays pretty well into Darth Ludicrous’s story line. Regardless of whether or not you consider the current administration to be a new “Evil Empire” (per Star Wars and per Ronald Reagan’s interpretation of the last big “united socialist republic”), there is a lot of disagreement over whether the spouted rhetoric matches what appears in any of the five (or so) different 800+ page versions of the so-called plan. With so many pages in multiple versions of the bill, it’s hard for me to understand how any politician can (in good conscience) get up and definitively say “this is what the plan says.” Sounds like “reality check” has a very Orwellian 1984 kind of meaning nowadays.
Whatever the case, I certainly hope that we don’t have to find out what kind of “benefits” we’ll be seeing as a result of the bill passing. Or that we can all become senators and not have to worry about it. Ooh…wait…the Emperor dissolves the senate at the beginning of episode IV. Oh well. Maybe we can all become stormtroopers. At least they get cool armor.
We had the opportunity to get out of our house this weekend and spend a few days visiting with my family. This equals new places to take pictures! Several of the upcoming “outdoorsy” episodes were shot at my parents’ house. I’m grateful for their willingness to put up with the makings of a web comic (and their encouragement: e.g. my Mom who kept saying, “ooh … you could take one over here with the [fill-in-the-blank]”
Do ever feel like your head’s just not on right in the morning until you’ve had breakfast? That’s how Percival feels. While the overarching theme is the same, I guess things are a little different for minifigs.
Ah, those poor Bad Minifigs. Always getting themselves into trouble of some form or another. I suppose they should be thankful they weren’t drizzled with honey … watch out for those ants!
I actually took this photo early this summer, and fully intended to use it much sooner, but I couldn’t decide on a caption. Now as summer is all but gone, it sadly dawned on my what it needed to be. Alas! We didn’t hit our local pool as much as we’d like — since it takes about 30-45 minutes to get everyone ready (our 4 kids are ages 7 and down) and then another 30-45 minutes to get “un-ready” after we get home — it pretty much means you have to set aside the whole afternoon for a “quick dip in the pool.”
And, actually, my kids already started school this week, but I realize that a lot don’t until next week, or even until the first week of September. Either way, I think most of us can sympathize with Joe Cool Minfig’s lament.
The text of today’s comic follows the tradition of the “If you give a mouse a cookie…” books. I thought it was interesting to consider what a troll might do with a cannon, and it had to be something you least expected.
This is what happens when a bowl of Cap’N Minifig Head cereal starts to get a little old. And those ain’t marshmallows!
Some minifigs just hang out in the wrong places! Today they are hanging for dear life in a suet bird-feeder. Thanks to my parents and their love for birds for making this shot possible!
